亨利·梅瑞威尔爵士系列

　　卡尔在他的另外22部小说中又创造了一个侦探角色―亨利·梅瑞威尔爵士。第一部以亨利·梅瑞威尔爵士为主角的小说《瘟疫庄谋杀案》于1934年出版。20年后亨利·梅瑞威尔爵士在《骑士之杯》（The Cavalier’s Cup）中破了他最后一个案子。

　　1933年，卡尔已经进行了三年创作，班考林和菲尔系列已经名声大噪。但是美国的出版商哈波兄弟规定一年之内不能为同一个作者出版两部以上的作品，因此卡尔带着他最新创造的侦探约翰·高特（《弓弦谋杀案》）找到了新的出版商威廉·莫罗，这是第一部也是最后一部约翰·高特系列。而他最后一部亨利·梅瑞威尔爵士系列小说也是由莫罗出版的，莫罗一共出版了22本梅瑞威尔系列小说。

　　卡尔本来想在莫罗使用克里斯托弗·伍德这个笔名，但是莫罗在没有告知卡尔的情况下就选用了卡尔·狄克森这个奇怪的笔名，这个名字也是出现在美国版精装本上的名字。让卡尔恼火的是哈波兄弟和莫罗这两家出版社意见分歧，坚持使用各自不同的笔名。

　　约翰·高特的小说大获成功，莫罗想为亨利·梅瑞威尔爵士系列也用一个和卡尔·狄克森相似的名字。所有意见最后归结为卡特莱特·狄克松。然而当《瘟疫庄谋杀案》正式出版的时候，莫罗再一次擅自更改了卡尔的笔名，这次他们用的是卡特·狄克森，这个笔名出现在这本书上，也出现在随后所有莫罗出版的卡尔作品中。

　　卡尔作品所有的英国版都是由威廉·海涅曼出版的，也包括约翰·高特系列。

　　所有威廉·莫罗初版的书都会在扉页和版权页注明初版日期，版权页上没有明确的表示“初版”，也没有提到印次，下面是亨利·梅瑞威尔爵士系列的原版封面，如果标题字是红色的，则表示不是初版。
