厄尔斯坦利加德纳是一位擅长写法庭侦探（一译公堂戏剧性派）小说的高手。他一生写了一百四十六部著作，其中最引人入胜的是以律师佩里梅森为主人公的八十六部探案小说，每部均在美国销售百万余册，而这套小说全球总销量已超过三亿册。美国影视界自己一九五七年把他的这些小说陆续改编成电视连续剧《佩里梅森》，由著名影星雷蒙德布尔主演，一连放映达十年之久，更使梅森律师成为美国家喻户晓的人物。(也是文学中最著名的律师形象。）

加德纳，一八八九年出生于马萨诸塞州莫尔登布，父亲为矿业工程师。他早年随父母到处旅行，曾在印第安纳州瓦尔帕莱索大学学习，中途辍学，不久去加里佛尼亚州定居，在一家
律师事务所当打字员，一九一一年获该州律师资格，开始为穷苦的亚裔（包括中国人）和墨（西哥）裔人等出庭辩护。他一生同情没有亲朋好友而遭受诬告的人们，专门帮助无罪入狱的人，还成立了专门的组织为他们仗义执言。他一方面从事律师工作，一方面开始为他报撰稿，正确地提示了美国法庭的内幕。他的小说比一般黄金时期的作家更有社会性，更接近于硬汉派的作家。直到一九三二年，他除了每周从事两天律师工作之外，每月均能写二十万字的作品。自梅森探案集《丝绒爪案件》（一九三三年）和《拗姑娘案件》（一九三三年）大获成功后，他就完全脱离了法律界，成为一名专业作家，后来一共发表了八十六部梅森探案小，最后五本在他死后出版。他的第二套系列作品是以地方检察官道格拉斯赛尔比为主人公的侦探小说。第三套系列作品写的是私人侦探库存尔和法学家拉姆的神秘离奇的故事，也写了二十九本之多。一九七零年，加德纳以八十一岁高龄病逝。

《梅森探案集》中的主人公梅森，就像作者加德纳本人一样，是一位刚正不阿的律师，在小说中自称要“全力以赴地为我的委托人而战”，“我的特长就是拼博”，因此他常在法庭快要定案宣判时，出其不意地提出确凿证据为被告辩护，使无罪者开脱，案情真相大白。这些探案另一特点是作者特别注重法医在侦案过程中搜集和保存证据的重要性，从而判定死者是意
外死亡，抑或自杀，还是被谋杀，以免误判造成冤案错案。加德纳为此在好几本小说的序言中都着重强调了这一点，并把着作献给他的一些好友──技能高超、经验丰富的杰出法医学专家。

《梅森探案集》在注重推理的同时也很重视戏剧效果。梅森往往在第六章就可以解开迷团，接下来就是为揭示迷团作准备，最后在法庭对决中一举击垮对手。法庭辩论的高潮也成为《梅森探案集》的一大特点。

作为一个高产的作家，当然无法要求每一部作品都很优秀。但厄尔斯坦利加德纳仍以其独特的魅力获得了读者和专家的认可，并于1962年获得爱伦坡奖之大师奖。

《梅森探案集》中国出版有文化艺术出版社十卷本，每本收两个故事。另有群众出版社的版本。
